She Got A Truck
Three years ago the research started with real purpose. What does a person do with their vehicle? She gave me a list once:
Drive to and from work and school and church and the beach.
Have enough seats to give friends rides to youth group.
Be dependable.
No loan.
Be mine.
I smiled at that. She was 13. Christina was riding everyone around for a small season when my van died, Louis was rear-ended (totaled his car), and one of my sisters had been in a wreck losing her car. Kimberly watched how Christina played taxi.
Our family has a van, the dependable 4runner, and Louis’ gas sipping Buick.
Kimberly wanted a truck from the time she started researching. Discussions with mechanics, truck owners, and friends, her online research, and trying out various cars, she decided that a truck it would be; Toyota Tacoma. Or maybe a Nissan Frontier. She wanted an extended cab for the 5x seats. She wanted to add a Bluetooth handsfree link for her music.
Several months of searching and maybes but nos. The week we moved she found a marketplace ad with a truck. Ooo. It’s black! Oh, it’s older than me. I laughed. It’s the same age as Christina’s 4runner.
Appointment, test drive, and she was almost shaking with excitement because it was just what she wanted. It even had an upgraded Bluetooth music and hands free setup!
Money exchanged, the gentleman selling walked her through all the quirks of the truck and how it handled. Insurance, title swapped, tagged… this proud 17yo has her own dependable wheels! (And Lucas was very excited to be the first official passenger) Prim didn’t want to get out, either.
She cleaned up her baby; his name is Col. Black – supposedly because he reminds her of a distinguished old man. Well, Christina’s is Old Blue, Aunt Becca’s was Captain Jack… so, Col. Black fits right in with our named vehicles.
She had a goal and made it! Still has money to spare for a few tweaking repairs and a possible new paint job… I’m so proud of my hard-working gymnast saver!!
Mom just might be terrified by this powerful girl driving her monster truck to school and church and gym, but you know, she loves it, and she’s been a safe chauffeur for two years… My prayers will always be riding with her.
